The History of Roulette

A French physicist, inventor, and mathematician named Blaise Pascal invented The Roulette wheel. Pascal was not originally trying to invent a casino game. Pascal had actually been trying to invent a perpetual motion machine in 1655.

A perpetual motion machine is a machine that keeps on operating without extracting energy from an external source. Physics rules suggest it’s unlikely but as an artist, Pascal sought to beat the odds. His experiment failed but one of the most successful casino games of all time was born in the process.

Apparently, there is evidence that shows many civilizations have played games that are very similar to what we know now as Roulette.

Ancient Chinese

Many people seem to believe that roulette is based on a traditional chinese board game involving arranging 37 animal figures in a magical square with a total of 666 numbers. The game was invented by Dominican monks who were profoundly interested in all facets of Chinese culture, and eventually introduced by them to Europe with small alterations.

Regrettably, no one can find precise information on how they actually played the original Chinese game. The monks allegedly altered the layout, creating a circle for the square and introducing a special slot to the number zero. The issue with this story is that the earliest French roulette had both a zero as well as a double zero slot – so the whole idea of ‘classic Chinese game’ is not possibly real. It’s true, however, that the numbers on the modern roulette wheel actually amount to 666 – which is rather cryptic.

Ancient Rome

Having to be a soldier in ancient Rome was not a profession which was especially pleasant and hopeful. Besides the low life expectancy, they have had to contend with witnessing the continuous wounding and murder of their friends and comrades in combat. That was more than enough to bring down the morale of the soldiers, thereby reducing their battlefield effectiveness.

To combat this, Roman commanders would allow their soldiers to have as much fun as possible – including gambling games participation. Most of those games involved spinning a shield or wheel of a chariot that is similar to how roulette is being played.

Ancient Greek

Greek soldiers also had a good amount of gambling games to enjoy while they were not dodging arrows or spears. There is one particular game that is quite nearly identical to roulette of modern times. Soldiers will draw symbols on a shield’s surface, then place it face-down on the ground and place an arrow beside it then they would spin the shield and bet on which symbol facing the arrow will stop at.

Any of those soldier games may have to do with roulette, but there’s just not enough proof to support the argument that roulette is a Greek or Roman game.

Without doubt Roulette is of French origin, thus the name. However, two quite similar games, popular in 17th century Europe, clearly influence the design and gameplay. They’ve been called ‘Roly Poly’ and ‘Even-Odd’ and both have a spinning wheel and betting on the spin result. The famous gambler, Blaise Pascal, undoubtedly knew about them as he created the wheel of his version.

Gambling at the time wasn’t very popular, mostly because it was unlawful in many European countries. The late 18th century, however, saw the implementation of strict gambling laws, rekindling gambling games in France and the rest of Europe.

Meanwhile, Monaco’s Prince Charles faced some money issues, then had the genius idea of using the growing popularity of gambling to solve some of them. He established several gambling houses in Monaco where roulette has been featured prominently. The game thus became truly popular within aristocrats and royalty.

Modern Roulette

Roulette is making a slow but sure return to the gambling scene, after many years of not being very famous compared to other casino games. The versatility of online casinos allows players to pick exactly what sort of game they want to play, so they don’t have to go out of their homes to gamble on a couple of spins.

While roulette is purely a game of chance, and there are no known methods to win it, watching the spin wheel holds a charm that can’t imitate many other casino games. The ancient Romans and Greeks knew how excited they were about holding and waiting to see if you got lucky. And, finally, you always do.

Roulette remains one of the greatest casino games, and is more accessible today than ever. Make the most of it, and enjoy! You go to Malaysia gambling to play Roulette!
